GlobalWoman, meet Lilith

The most maligned goddess in the astrological pantheon, and the one most worth understanding.

The lowdown

What is Lilith in astrology?

Lilith in astrology most often means Black Moon Lilith: the point in the Moon’s orbit where it swings farthest from the Earth. She shows the wild, refused and exiled part of you: the desire, anger and power you were told to hide, and the place in your life where you will not be tamed.

Lilith is one of the oldest and most distorted figures in the astrological canon. Most chart readings skip her entirely, reducing the feminine to just two symbols, Venus and the Moon.

Leave Lilith out, along with the asteroid goddesses, and a whole side of the psyche goes unseen. Bring her back, and something clicks: the part of you that never fitted, refused to shrink, and was punished for it, finally has a name.

Lilith was never the villain of this story.

How to find her

How to find Lilith in your birth chart

1Get your birth date, place and, ideally, your exact birth time.
2Open a free chart calculator. Astro-Seek shows Lilith in most charts. On astro.com, choose the Extended Chart Selection and add Lilith under additional objects.
3Look for her glyph, : a dark crescent moon resting on a cross.
4Note her sign and house. Her sign shows the flavour of what was exiled. Her house shows where in your life it lives.
5Check whether she touches your Sun, Moon, Venus, Ascendant or Midheaven. A close contact puts her power front and centre.

No birth time?

Sign, yes. House, no.

Black Moon Lilith spends about nine months in each sign, so your birth date alone gives you her sign. Her house needs your exact birth time.

In your chart

Black Moon Lilith, Asteroid Lilith and Dark Moon Lilith

Three points, three ways in.

Astrologers work with three different Liliths. Most of the time, “Lilith” means the first.

The most used

Black Moon Lilith

The point in the Moon’s orbit farthest from the Earth. Calculated as mean or true, it is the Lilith most charts show.

A real asteroid

Asteroid Lilith

Asteroid 1181 Lilith, discovered in 1927 and named in honour of the French composer Lili Boulanger.

The phantom

Dark Moon Lilith

A second moon of Earth reported in 1898 and never confirmed. A few astrologers still use it, as a symbol of what is hidden.

Lilith in Scorpio is one of her most potent placements. Read about Lilith in Scorpio, with the women who carry it.

The myth

Lilith goddess meaning: who was Lilith?

Every name imaginable, and still she endured.

Handmaiden · Priestess · Rebel · Seductress · Demon · Child-killer · Temptress · Feminist · Dark goddess

From her first appearances to now, Lilith has been called every name imaginable, which is exactly how she became the most maligned of the female archetypes.

In Mesopotamia

The wind spirits

Her roots reach back to the lilitu, wind and night spirits of ancient Mesopotamia. In one Sumerian story, a wild spirit makes her home in Inanna’s sacred tree, a link many trace to Lilith, though scholars still debate it.

In the Bible

A single line

Lilith appears just once in the Hebrew Bible, in the Book of Isaiah, as a creature of the night who makes her home in the wilderness.

In Jewish folklore

Adam’s first wife

In the medieval Alphabet of Ben Sira, she becomes Adam’s first wife: not made from his rib like Eve, but from the earth, at the same time as him. Made as equals, she insisted they stay that way. Adam refused. Rather than submit, she spoke the name of God and flew from the garden.

In Kabbalah

The dark queen

In later Kabbalistic tradition, she becomes the consort of Samael, queen of the demons: the story at its most distorted.

Lilith shares her earliest ground with Inanna. Meet the names that travelled with her, or follow Inanna’s descent.

The refusal

Lilith, the first feminist

Rather than compromise her power, Lilith chose exile, and was punished for it. Women absorbed that story for centuries: know your place, stay quiet, and expect to be pushed to the margins the moment you question the status quo.

Where Lilith sits in your chart points to where your real power lives.
Not the power you were assigned.
The power you were told to give away.

In the twenty-first century, she is asking for the story to change. Waking up her energy means reclaiming what was always yours: integrity, autonomy, equality.

The way out

How Lilith helps you find your way in the world

Most muses guide you towards something. Lilith guides you away: out of the garden that was built for you, and into a life you choose.

She finds her way by leaving. Not out of spite, but because she knows the difference between belonging somewhere and being kept there. The house where Lilith sits in your chart is the part of your life where you are called to stop asking permission.

Name what you were told to hide

Her first step

The desire, the anger, the ambition, the body. Lilith starts by giving these back their names, because you can’t find your way while pretending part of you doesn’t exist.

Say no without exiling yourself

Her hardest lesson

Lilith was punished for refusing. Your work is to refuse without disappearing: to hold your boundary and still stay in the room, in the relationship, in the world.

Choose your own garden

Her destination

Leaving isn’t the end of the story. Lilith asks where you would build your life if no one else were drawing the map, and then asks you to start building it.

Lilith doesn’t show you the path.
She shows you the door.

Reflection

Ask yourself

1

What desires have I sacrificed to be the compliant woman?

2

Is there any part of me that feels exiled or imprisoned?

3

What practices could help me reclaim those exiled parts?

4

What do I judge other women for? That’s where my shadow work begins.

5

What desires haven’t I brought forward in my life yet?

6

What do I need to let go of to feel fully free?

7

Where in my life do I feel powerless?

8

How do I resolve conflict without exiling myself?

9

How do I help uphold the structures that hold women back?
